Here are some notes as provided by MAFF ( Now known as DEFRA) concerning the feral pigeon problem in Trafalgar square.
Hazards that pigeons cause:
- Disease transmission to humans.
- "Slip hazards" and disease transmission to other birds.
Pigeons can pass more than 30 diseases to humans, most of them respiratory conditions, and a further 10 that can be passed on to domestic animals. The bird carries several pathogenic organisms with the potential to harm humans, including E. Coli, salmonella and Cryptococcosus neoformans - the cause of cryptococcal meningitis.
These are general notes concerning the hazards when humans come into contact with pigeons.
Wild Birds and Disease
Working in areas near to accumulations of nests and guano from well-used roosting and nesting areas is unpleasant at the best of times. These areas are usually infested with insects - often blood-feeding ones; they are dirty and smelly. These areas may also harbour micro organisms, which can lead to human diseases. In some cases, these diseases can prove fatal, so this potential hazard must not be underestimated.
We provide nets and spikes to keep pigeons off areas they are not wanted. We will soon be offering other bird deterrents.
